HISTORY

J.H. “Pete” Sims founded J. H. Sims Trucking Company, Inc. in 1943 when he was driving for a trucking company whose owner retired.  Pete bought the nearly new truck he had been driving and continued the former owner’s relationship with Sunkist – a company to which Sims Trucking is proud to have continually provided services for more than 65 years.

In 1973 Pete sold a portion of Sims Trucking to his son Jim, and after retiring in 1988, completed the sale in 1994.  Jim is currently selling the business to his son Clint.

Clint began working part-time in the repair shop when he was 15 years old, becoming full time in 1990.  He later advanced to Director of Maintenance, serving in that capacity for 13 years.  He has been in charge of all operations since 2007, and our customers can be assured that our superior level of service and commitment will continue for many years to come.

RIGHT:  This is Jim’s 1956 Kenworth equipped with a factory sleeper. It is fashioned after the original truck seen in the slideshows above.

The restored truck is not the original from the Sims fleet. It is powered by a 743 cubic inch, (slightly more than 12 liters) model NHBS Cummins engine factory rated @ 275 horsepower.

Being equipped with a gear driven roots-type supercharger, they were sometimes called “Chargers” and "Iron Lungs”, and also “Six Bits” or “2-Six Bits” referring to the 2-75 H.P. rating.

Jim learned to drive trucks in the 1950’s in the #2 ’56 Autocar and the original #3 ’55 Kenworth pictured above.
