RIGHT: This is Jim’s 1956 Kenworth equipped with a factory
sleeper. It is fashioned after the original truck seen in the
slideshows above.
The restored truck
is not the original from the Sims fleet. It is powered by a 743
cubic inch, (slightly more than 12 liters) model NHBS Cummins engine
factory rated @ 275 horsepower.
Being equipped
with a gear driven roots-type supercharger, they were sometimes
called “Chargers” and "Iron Lungs”, and also “Six Bits” or “2-Six
Bits” referring to the 2-75 H.P. rating.
Jim learned to
drive trucks in the 1950’s in the #2 ’56 Autocar and the original #3
’55 Kenworth pictured above.
